Product Description
Subtly abstract, this timeless tree photographed by Francesco Mastalia with his antique lens and camera is a classic keeper. But a small window into a much larger exquisite collection, the sepia tones of this black and white photo evoke a simpler time more connected to nature.
The Process: The portraits of the Tree collection were photographed using the wet plate collodion process, a technique developed in the mid-19th century, when the art of photography was in its infancy. Working with a large format wooden camera, an 1870’s brass lens, and portable darkroom, glass plates are hand-coated with a blend of collodion and light sensitive salts to produce one of a kind images. Each step of the process has a life of its own. There are no light meters to guide in exposure. Temperature and humidity play a role, and the UV light sensitivity renders different then what the naked eye can see. With so many factors inherent to its unique characteristics, no two plates are ever alike.
