Product Description

Sculptural, timeless, spare, this exquisite Poppy by Francesco Mastalia has been immortalized in sepia with the help of this talented photographer's antique lens, camera, photographic process, and keen eye.

The Process: The portraits of the Flower collection were photographed using the wet plate collodion process, a technique developed in the mid-19th century, when the art of photography was in its infancy. Working with a large format wooden camera, an 1870’s brass lens, and portable darkroom, glass plates are hand-coated with a blend of collodion and light sensitive salts to produce one of a kind images. Each step of the process has a life of its own. There are no light meters to guide in exposure. Temperature and humidity play a role, and the UV light sensitivity renders different then what the naked eye can see. With so many factors inherent to its unique characteristics, no two plates are ever alike.
